Letters to Johnny Apple Seed
These are just a few of over a hundred letters that have been sent to me.
May 3,2006
Hello Johnny Apple seed:
I live in the Portsmouth area and I am happy to say that you have cleared up the mystery of
the location of lock 54. I am an active member of the Canal Society. For years, this boggled
my mind but after looking at the map that you submitted and the explanation about the
rivers, you made it look so easy and you are absolutely right.

To Jeff Maximovich:
I attended your speech at the Brown Bag Lunch at the Massillon Museum. This is
the first time that I have ever attended a history lesson that was not boring! I'll be
looking for your book. Keep up the good work!

Mr. Maximovich:
Your speech was wonderful at the Massillon Museum. I felt educated about the Ohio & Erie
Canal by the time you were finished. You have a certain twist to the way you relay your
information. It is very interesting. I can't wait for your book.
To Jeff, the canalwayman:
I was so impressed with your display at the Genealogy Fair. It must have taken you
forever to accumulate so much information. I would like to speak to you some day.
The canal runs directly behind our property. We'll be in touch.

Jeff Maximovich:
I have lived in Massillon all my life. I am 79. I read your article in the Massillon Independent.
You really know your business. As a child, I can still remember what was left of the Ohio &
Erie Canal downtown. It did run exactly where you claimed. I have not heard anyone express
themselves so well about the history of the Ohio & Erie Canal. You should be very proud of
yourself. I wish in my life, I could have taken the time to have done something as wonderful
as walking the Ohio & Erie Canal but being a mother and raising kids - that was out of the
question. My thoughts are with you and I hope all of your hard work takes you somewhere.
The route I walked along
October, 2005 Hello Canalwayman:
I read your article in the Cleveland Sunday Magazine on October 16. I am an active member of
The Canal Society. Immediately, a few colleagues and I ran down to visit the claimed site of
lock 42. We always felt that River Lock 42 was in that general area but now it all makes
sense. Living near Cleveland, kept my interest up about the locks near the Cuyahoga River
and the steel mills. I wish to congratulate you on all your hard work and effort.
It must have been an amazing passage through time walking the entire length of the Ohio &
Erie Canal. My constituents and I do apologize for all the negativism concerning your work.
This negativism was uncalled for, especially coming from a member in your area. I
personally do not feel that in any way, shape or form you are an "amateur archaeologist".
Furthermore, you certainly have a lot to offer us if you would care to join our organization.

The famous detective Elliott Ness once work a series of gruesome murders that
took place in an inlet north of lock 42 on the Ohio & Erie Canal call Kingsbury Run?
