NO, IT DIDN'T. IT WAS INTENDED TO AND ONLY GOT WITHIN FEET OF THE RIVER. ITS FINAL DEBUT WAS TO BE 1912.
FOR NEARLY 70 YEARS, THE PLANS TO CONNECT IT NEVER MATERIALIZED.

I DON'T KNOW OF ANY LOCK AT MILE 140 BUT THE AREA THAT YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT IS MILE 150. THE AREA WAS
CALLED TRINWAY. BOTTOMS ROAD HAD A LOCK - LOCK 20. IT WAS THE BOTTOM OF THE NORTH END OF THE
LICKING SUMMIT.

YES. IT WAS ON THE NORTHERN BANK ON THE DRESDEN SIDECUT AT T THE RIVER.

DEAR JEFF. THE 1988 CANAL MOTOR TOUR OF SOUTHERN OHIO CLAIMS THAT LOCK 47 IS AT A DIFFERENT
LOCATION THAN WHAT YOU HAVE CLAIMED. WHO'S RIGHT?

I'M RIGHT. THEY WERE ONE MILE OFF AND EVEN ON THE OPPOSITE SIDE OF THE ROAD. THEY CLAIMED IT TO BE AT
A CORNER LOT THAT HAD VISIBLE SIGNS OF STRUCTURES THAT HAD ONCE SAT THERE. THE CANAL WAS ON THE
OPPOSITE SIDE OF THE ROAD. THE REAL LOCK 47 WAS LESS THAN ONE MILE TO THE NORTH NEXT TO GANDER
HOOK CREEK ON THE SAME SIDE OF THE ROAD. AFTER LEAVING THE LOCK, THE CANAL CROSSED OVER. I HAVE
PAPERS OF AUTHENTICITY TO PROVE IT AND FURTHERMORE, IF THEY WOULD HAVE RESEARCHED, THE FARM IS
CALLED "LOCK 18". IT GOT ITS NAME BECAUSE IT WAS 18 MILES FROM THE OHIO RIVER. IT WAS CALLED FLOWERS
MILL AND HOWARD'S MILL DURING ITS STAY AT THAT LOCATION (IT WAS LATER DISASSEMBLED AND MOVED TO
WATER ST. IN CHILLICOTHE

YES, I HAVE ALREADY STARTED MY RESEARCH ON THE P&O CANAL SYSTEM BEGINNING AT LOCK 1 IN AKRON.  THIS
RESEARCH WILL TAKE ME MORE THAN 80 MILES TO THE EAST ENDING UP NEAR NEWCASTLE, PENNSYLVANIA ON
THE BEAVER CANAL SYSTEM. THE P&O CANAL MEANS THIS - PENNSYLVANIA & OHIO. THANKS FOR OFFERING BUT

THE CANAL CANNOT BE NAVIGATED IN ITS ENTIRETY. HERE ARE A FEW OF THE PLACES WHERE THE CANAL COULD
POSSIBLY BE NAVIGATED. FROM LOCK I ON THE NORTH END OF THE PORTAGE SUMMIT THROUGH SUMMIT LAKE,
ENDING UP IN LOCK I AT THE SOUTH END OF THE PORTAGE SUMMIT A T WOLF CREEK. ANOTHER WOULD BE
NORTH OF CANAL FULTON BEGINNING NEAR LAKE LUCERNE ALL THE WAY TO LOCK 4 WHICH SITS SOUTH OF
CANAL FULTON. IN HEBRON, SOUTH OF NEWARK FOR A FEW MILES, THE CANAL COULD BE NAVIGATED CROSSING
DUCK CREEK ALONG ROUTE 360. ANOTHER WOULD BE THE SOUTH END OF BUCKEYE LAKE THROUGH
MILLERSPORT, FURTHER SOUTH, A FEW MILES JUST SOUTH OF SPUNKEY TOWN ON CANAL ROAD AROUND CANAL
MILE 240. IT'S IN PERFECT CONDITION.

- THE OHIO & ERIE CANAL. MY WIFE AND I ARE INTRIGUED BY THE HISTORY OF THE NORTHERN END OF THE CANAL
SYSTEM. DID YOU SAY THAT ON THE NORTHERN END OF THE PORTAGE SUMMIT THERE WERE TWO LOCK ONES?
HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE?

MOST PEOPLE GET INVOLVED IN THE NORTHERN END OF THE CANAL SYSTEM FROM THE ZOAR VALLEY AROUND MILE
87 GOING NORTH TO LAKE ERIE. THE REASON IS SIMPLE. THEY HAVE ASSESSABLE TOW PATHS. SOME DAY
HOPEFULLY, THE TOW PATHS WILL ONCE AGAIN CONNECT THROUGHOUT THE STATE MAKING TRAVEL POSSIBLE
FROM CLEVELAND TO PORTSMOUTH AGAIN. THIS TIME, IT WILL BE DONE BY FOOT OR BICYCLE.  THERE WERE
CERTAINLY, TWO LOCK 1 'S ON THE NORTHERN END OF THE PORTAGE SUMMIT.  THEY BOTH EXISTED AT THE SAME
TIME AND AT THE SAME PLACE, ONE OF WHICH WENT NORTH DOWN THE OHIO & ERIE CANAL.  THE OTHER, THE P&O
CANAL, WENT EAST ENDING UP NEAR NEWCASTLE, PA.

BRIDGE NEAR ARLINGTON ST. THAT YOU AND ONLY YOU HAVE CLAIMED TO BE AN AQUEDUCT USED BY THE P&O
CANAL. WELL, I HAVE RESEARCHED THIS VIGOROUSLY. NOW, TWO PEOPLE BELIEVE IT. IT MAKES SENSE. JUST
LIKE YOU HAVE CLAIMED, ONLY YARDS PAST A STONE AQUEDUCT, IS ANOTHER BRIDGE WHICH WAS CLEARLY
BUILT YEARS LATER AND BUILT SO MUCH HIGHER THAN THE SPAN YOU CLAIM TO BE AN AQUEDUCT. IF THE
AQUEDUCT WAS ACTUALLY A RAILROAD BRIDGE BUILT AT THE SAME TIME, WOULDN'T IT HAVE BEEN THE SAME
HEIGHT?

THAT'S QUITE A QUESTION. I'VE ALWAYS FELT THAT WAS AN AQUEDUCT.  THERE IS ALSO SOMEONE'S NAME CHISELED
IN - 1848, YEARS BEFORE THE RAILROAD CAME ALONG. I DON'T THINK I NEED TO SAY ANYMORE.  THANK YOU FOR
AGREEING WITH ME. IN RESPONSE TO THE QUESTION OF THE HEIGHT OF THE AQUEDUCT, IT WOULD HAVE BEEN
BUILT THE SAME HEIGHT RATHER THAN TO STACK 15'OF LOOSE LIMESTONE ON TOP TO MATCH THE HEIGHT OF THE
OTHER.

YOUR WORK STATES THAT IN SOUTHERN OHIO, ON PAST CIRCLEVILLE, THAT THE FEEDER DAM ON THE SCIOTO
RIVER IS TO THE NORTH OF LOCKS 33 AND 34 ON ROUTE 104 SOUTH. THE PUBLISHED INFORMATION HAS BEEN
OUT THERE YEARS NOW AND THE WRITER IS TOTALLY CREDIBLE AND CLAIMS THE FEEDER IS TO THE SOUTH OF
THOSE TWO LOCKS. EXPLAIN THIS IF YOU CAN.

THIS IS EASY TO EXPLAIN BUT FIRST OF ALL, I NEVER SAID THOSE LOCKS WERE ON ROUTE 104. THEY'RE NOT.
THEY'RE ON CANAL RD. SOUTH OF SPUNKEY TOWN IN WAYNE TOWNSHIP.  THE ROAD USED TO BE CALLED WHISKEY
SWITCH RD. WHICH LEADS INTO ROUTE 104. THIS IS THE TYPE OF CRITICISM I CONSTANTLY GET AS I AM DOING MY
RESEARCH ON THE OHIO & ERIE CANAL BUT IT HAS NEVER GOTTEN UNDER MY SKIN. I TAKE IT WITH A GRAIN OF SALT.  
THE REAL FACT REMAINS - THE FEEDER IS NORTH OF THE LOCKS AND HIS PUBLICATION HAS A FEW MISTAKES. MY
SUGGESTION TO YOU IS, GO AND LOOK FOR YOURSELF.  YOU OBVIOUSLY HA VENT DONE THIS OR YOU WOULDN'T

MR. KNOW-IT-ALL. MOST OF YOUR STUFF IS ALL RIGHT BUT YOUR NOT A GENIUS ON ALL SUBJECTS. FOR
INSTANCE, OHIO WAS A SLAVE-FREE STATE AND THE BLACKS COULD ROAM FREELY THROUGHOUT. WHY DON'T
YOU RECOGNIZE THOSE HARD FACTS AND JUST STICK WITH THE CANAL STUFF?

OBVIOUSLY, I'M DEALING WITH A TOTAL GENIUS. SO, HERE ARE SOME FACTS. OHIO DID NOT WORK THE SLAVES IN THE
FIELDS AS THEY DID IN THE SOUTH. IF THEY DID WORK THE FIELDS IN OHIO, THEY WERE PROBABLY PAID BUT WERE
STILL KEPT HIDDEN. AND WHY WAS THAT, MR. EINSTEIN? BECAUSE OHIO HAD NO LEGISLATION TO PROTECT THEIR
RIGHTS AND NEGROES COULD BE TAKEN BACK ACROSS THE MASON-DIXON LINE WITHOUT ANY CONSEQUENCES TO

IN AKRON BEGINNING NEAR THE CIVIC THEATRE. LOCKS 4 THROUGH 9 WERE REMOVED AND A NEW SPILLWAY
WAS CONCRETED IN. SO, LET'S TEST YOUR KNOWLEDGE A LITTLE. FIRST OF ALL, WHERE WAS ALL THE WATER
DIVERTED DURING CONSTRUCTION?
SECONDLY, HOW MANY WATERFALLS LIE BELOW AKRON IN THAT DARK TUNNEL?

THE ANSWER TO THE FIRST QUESTION IS EASY. DURING CONSTRUCTION, THE WATER WAS DIVERTED DOWN THE
TUSCARAWAS RIVER FROM THE DAM AT LONG LAKE.  THE FEEDER WAS SLOWED DOWN ONTO THE OHIO & ERIE
CANAL. LOCK I NORTH WAS SHUT OFF.   THE WATER IN THE CANAL WENT SOUTH INTO BARBERTON AND SPILLED
BELOW WOLF CREEK.  THE SECOND QUESTION CONCERNING THE WATERFALLS - FROM THE FIRST LEVEL TO THE
SECOND, IT SEEMS I REMEMBER THREE WATERFALLS, ALL SIDE BY SIDE. ONCE ABOVE, I NOTICED THEY COULD BE
REGULATED TO BE TURNED OFF OR ON. GOING SOUTH, WAS ANOTHER HIGH WATERFALL PROBABLY 25' HIGH AND
JUST AS WIDE. FURTHER SOUTH WOULD BE MAY BE THREE MORE BUT NOT NEARLY AS HIGH, ENDING UP JUST
NORTH OF LOCK 3 PARK.

ITS HEAD. WHERE DID IT GO AND HOW DID IT COME OFF?

YOU KNOW, I COULD REALLY HAVE A GOOD TIME WITH THIS ANSWER AND MAY BE I WILL SO, FORGIVE THE HUMOR. I

THE LICKING SUMMIT. I BELIEVE I CAN. JUST ON THE WESTERN SIDE OF FRAZEYSBURG IS WHAt  IS KNOWN AS
VICKERS LOCK16 OR WAS IT? PROBABLY NOT.  THIS LAST SENTENCE WILL CREATE LOTS OF CONTRA VERSY.
THE REAL LOCK 16 SITS IN THE BLACK HAND GORGE ONLY YARDS WEST OF TOBOSO RD. THE NUMBERING
SYSTEM GETS HIGHER AS YOU DESCEND THE LICKING SUMMIT. FROM THE LOCK IN THE BLACK HAND GORGE
GOING EAST EIGHT MILES, IS THE VICKERS LOCK ON THE OUTSKIRTS OF FRAZEYSBURG ON CANAL RD.  THAT
WAS ACTUALLY LOCK 17- NOT 16 AND A MILL DID OPERATE IN FRAZEYSBURG BUT NOTHING REALLY
SUBSTANTIATES THAT A LOCK WAS ACTUALLY THERE EXCEPT FOR A SIGN. IT MAY OR MAY NOT HAVE BEEN
THERE. GOING FURTHER EAST TOWARDS THE BOTTOM OF THE SUMMIT, THE NEXT LOCK IS UPPER WEBBSPORT,
LOCK 18, THEN LOCK 19, LOWER WEBBSPORT, ON THE OPPOSITE SIDE OF WAKATOMIKA CREEK. THEN
ANOTHER MILE FURTHER IS LOCK 20 AT TRINWAY. NOW, HOW CAN ANYONE REALLY DISPUTE THIS?

CAMOUFLAGE WAS STALKING YOU. THAT IS VERY WEIRD DON'T YOU THINK?

Yes I do, this is what happened. I could here twigs snapping and something moving through the brush and thought a
predatory animal was stalking me. I knew ahead was a clearing and was hoping to get their and deal with this. It was 3
hours now that I was being hunted and knew that I wasn't alone and whatever I was dealing with stayed just out of sight.
Once in the clearing it never reveled itself than I change my direction with my weapon drawn to now turn this chase
around and it was fleeing the area now I was the hunter. Then returning to my course, hid and waited 1/2 mile further
down the towpath, just as I was ready to getup and moving it was able to get close but didn't see me their it was, not a
animal but a large man, fully dressed in a camouflage even his face mask. This was very Erie. I yelled out and startled
him. I can see you now back off with these games or I'll end it for you right now - he blended back in the woods and never
seen him again. Who would think this stuff goes on.
